Terry Williams interview

This interview was done via e-mail and received back on the 20th of November 2000.

What is the best show you have ever been a guest on?

I was on tour in NZ and ended op on a show called "Sally Sells" which features 5 minute guests spruiking their latest inventions or plain old come and buy this stuff. I was talking about the tour between a guy who invented a plastic trash bag holder and a women hawking homemade waxing gel. Heady stuff.

What made you decide to be a comedian?

Luck, chance and the people I was hanging out with. My entire career has been an accident.

What was it like to be a regular guest on O'Loghlin on Saturday night?

Like being a one off guest many times. I wasn't really part of the show as such. I just rocked up and did my thing. It was a good learning experience and a bit of fun but I don't think it ever really found itself.

What's it like to be an American comedian performing in Australia?

Nothing against the question but where you are from and where you are aren't really important in comedy. Sure it flavors the performance, but most comics are from somewhere else when they perform. It is the fresh eyes of a visitor talking about "this place" that most people want. The old comedy adage is that you are never respected in your hometown. That said, I have always marvelled at eaisly I have been accepted and enjoyed in this country.

What influenced you to give your e-mail address out on national television?

Didn't really think about it at the time...it was a joke about how easy it is to get hold of me and GNW hadn't for 5 years.

What were the results of that?

I would have put "this interview" but you said you got my address off a mailing list. So the results were that no one at all has contacted me because of it and I wasn't invited to the last show of GNW. And just to continue the experiment... tommydean@yahoo.com

Were you expecting those results?

I live a life of very little expectation so it didn't matter one way or the other.

What is it like to be one of the writers on BackBerner?

Great fun, stressful, boring, exciting, challanging, tiresome, depends on what day it is. :) It has been my first experience doing TV from the inside. It is more of a real job than expected but has been the best fun ll year. Looking forward to next yers season.

Have you ever experienced pure ecstasy?

No...I am pretty sure it has always been cut with something (boom tish!) I have had some moments of pure clarity which had I remembered them could have led to extacy.

What keeps you performing as a comedian?

Bills.

What's your idea of a perfect party?

Great friends...friends of great friends...a huge spa...and the Black Crowes playing live in the backyard.

If you could do anything in the world, what would you do?

Play golf and go to a Black Crowes concert.

Where's the best place you've ever performed?

The Sit-Down comedy club in Brisbane in 94 and 95. It has moved on but will never be the same.

Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Yes.
