Nikki of Novak'n Goode returned this interview on the 9th of May 2001, in a word document, attached to an e-mail.
What's it like being in a duo?
Being a duo is cool coz you don't have to get up in front of scary audiences on your own. It's magical to have someone to talk to after the gig whose had the same experience as you have. Sometimes we spend hours together pulling our own knobs over a particularly fabulous gig. It's also a good buffer against the harsh barbs of criticism that get launched in our direction. We can sit around and whine about how fucked they all are, coz we're perfect. We are like so good at taking criticism. (not!)
How does it compare to being in a trio?
Being a trio was fabulous for me personally, coz it's more satisfying arranging 3 part harmonies that 2 parters. Doing unaccompanied singing is one of our specialities and it was just so much more special with 3. We started as 5 and I remember being so sad every time we lost a voice. But when you work with women there's always the possibility of pregnancy, and these women just kept on getting up the duff no matter how much Jude and I tried to limit their sexual activities. Mind you, the money's better with 2.
How did you feel being a winner of the king of comedy award for the 2001 Perth Comedy Season?
Winning the King of Comedy award was a real hoot. What was funniest was the fact that we weren't there to receive the award because Christina Critch, our esteemed festival co-ordinater, forgot that she'd booked us tickets to go see Tripod on the same night. As we had no idea we were even up for the award we happily went off to watch Tripod. When Tripod had finished people kept coming up to congratulate us on our win. We were like, "What the - ?!" What a fabbo surprise it all turned out to be.
How did it feel to be upstaged by Lano and Woodley using your material?
We don't feel that Lano and Woodley upstaged us at all. We took it as a profound compliment that they refered to our material in their gig.
What's your favourite song that you and Judy sing?
It's difficult to say what's a favourite song. Anything we're not thoroughly bored with is usually the choice of the moment.
What's your favourite venue to perform in?
We love performing in any venue where our sound is well mixed and the audience is full and enthusiastic. We love anywhere that loves us.
How long exactly have you been performing as a comedian?
Both myself and Jude were weaned on community theatre and we both studied theatre at a University level. This involves doing comedy plays. So I'd say we've got over 20yrs performing experience under our belts.
What was your favourite part of the 2001 Perth Comedy Season?
The whole Perth Comedy season was a hoot. We spent it basking in the glow of the Gala performance. What a party.
How often do you lie about being paid "fuck all"?
How often do I lie to who about being paid?
How many diseases are mentioned in the "Medical" song?
I'm to sick to count how many diseases are mentioned in the Medical Song.
What's your favourite part of the CD you and Judy made and sell?
My favourite bit of the cd is the 1st track 'Pigs'. It kind of sums up everything for me.
Assuming your surname isn't really 'Goode' and Judy's isn't 'Novak', how did the name of your duo come about?
Dunno. Thought of it. Thought it was funny. Hated the old name.
